DOTC chief no-show at House probe on LRT, MRT fare hikes

Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio "Jun" Abaya is expected to explain the agency's bases for increasing fares in the Light Rail Transit and Metro Rail Transit but failed to attend the hearing in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

MANILA, Philippines - Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio "Jun" Abaya asked to be excused from the House of Representatives transportation committee hearing on the fare increase of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) on Thursday.

DOTC Undersecretary Jose Lotilla said that Abaya was busy for the preparations for the arrival of Pope Francis next week, according to a report.

On the other hand, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares argued that Abaya should have been present for the House hearing since meetings for the papal visit could have been done on another day.

Colmenares said that Abaya had time for media interviews to defend the fare hike but failed to attend the hearing. The hearing for the proposed hikes was already scheduled beforehand.

Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza added that since Abaya is the signatory in the documents approving the fare hike, it is only necessary that he explain the DOTC's bases for increasing LRT and MRT fares.

Lotilla defended DOTC's decision to increase fares, reiterating that the agency needs additional funds to repair and improve the train systems.

The Palace earlier assured that the fare increase in the LRT and MRT would result to a better service for commuters.
