(UPDATE) Lawmaker ambushed in MisOr, 4 dead

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Unidentified armed men waylaid a lawmaker and his entourage this afternoon, leaving his driver and three escorts dead, police said.

Iligan City representative Vicente Belmonte was ambushed at around 1:45 in Laguindingan town in the province of Misamis Oriental, said Philippine National Police (PNP) public information office head Chief Wilben Mayor.

Mayor said Belmonte was not harmed but he was brought to a hospital in Misamis Oriental for checkup.

The congressman was a few kilometers away from the Laguindingan airport when his car was fired upon by the suspects, according to local reports.

Police were probing into the reason of the ambush.
