10,000 signatures vs pork barrel submitted to Comelec
MANILA, Philippines - Various groups trooped to the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) offices in Quezon City on Tuesday to submit a list of 10,000 signatures as part of their campaign for the abolition of all forms of pork barrel in government.
The members of the groups, led by People's Initiative to Abolish the Pork Barrel System movement, gathered at the Quezon City Sports complex Club around 9 a.m. before marching to the Comelec office.
The groups' members advocating for the abolition of the pork barrel arrived at the Comelec around 10:30 a.m. to submit the signatures for verification.
The more than 10,000 signatures were received by the six Comelec district offices in Quezon City.
Before the submission, some 20 vehicles held an anti-pork caravan from the QC Sports Club to the Comelec in QC Hall compound.
The solicited signatures will be part of the three percent required signatures for the people's initiative, aimed at abolishing the pork barrel system through a referendum.
The groups are targetting to get at least six million signatures nationwide, one million of which is are expected to be gathered in Metro Manila.
