Public warned vs toxic Halloween toys

MANILA, Philippines - Spooky toys and other products used during Halloween can be more dangerous than scary, an environmental group warned the public yesterday.

Thony Dizon, Ecowaste Coalition coordinator, said the public may expose themselves to lead and other toxic chemicals when using Halloween products.

“It’s good to exercise precaution when buying such items, as toymakers and sellers cash in on the growing popularity of Halloween in some sections of society,” Dizon said.

He said consumers must be extra cautious for their own protection.

According to Ecowaste, excessive lead exposure is known to cause abdominal pain and cramping, aggressive behavior, anemia , constipation, difficulty in sleeping, headaches, irritability, loss of previous developmental skills (in young children), low appetite and energy, reduced sensations as well as vomiting, staggering walk, muscle weakness or seizures .

Experts said 90 parts per million (ppm) is the limit set for lead exposure.

Ecowaste tested a number of products in the market and found that 21 of 50 samples contained toxic chemicals, such as lead.

Among the products tested were ceramic pumpkin candleholder (43,100 ppm); a trick or treat bag and handle (10,400 ppm); a giant black widow spider (1,641 ppm); a garland with pumpkin design (1,095 ppm) and a Halloween party mask (495 ppm).

The group said the products were worth P35 to P259.50 each and sold in various stores in Baclaran, Divisoria and Ermita in Manila, as well as in Caloocan and Quezon cities.

Most of the products are poorly labeled and often have zero information about their chemical content, Ecowaste said.
