Gov’t to insist on Amalilio’s extradition

MANILA, Philippines - The government will insist on the extradition of businessman Manuel Amalilio from Malaysia to stand trial for the P12-billion scam of Aman Futures Group Phils. Inc.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima yesterday also confirmed that the Malaysian government has discontinued proceedings for the return of Amalilio to the country, as agreed upon last year.

“We are studying our options – if we can move for reconsideration of their decision under their laws. We really don’t have an extradition treaty with Malaysia, but their laws provide for extradition on basis of mutual assistance subject to their discretion,” she told reporters.

De Lima said the government would also look into options under the mutual legal assistance treaty in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations where both the Philippines and Malaysia are members.

Still, De Lima expressed disappointment over the reported decision of Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs to withdraw its earlier endorsement of Amalilio’s extradition to the Philippines.

She said the government would inquire as to the reason behind the development.

It was learned that the proceedings were in the preliminary hearing before a court when the ministry’s endorsement was withdrawn.
