MANILA, Philippines - Former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Avelino Razon has filed a petition asking the Sandiganbayan to allow him to post bail.
Lawyers for the former top police official argued the evidence presented by the prosecution was not strong to deny him the right to bail.
Razon is charged with two counts of malversation in the anomalous repair of police armored vehicles in 2007 amounting to P385.48 million before the Sandiganbayan’s Fourth Division.
He has been detained at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame since August last year.
Defense lawyers said Razon was not yet PNP chief when the project was conceived and not even a member of the bids and awards committee when the project was given to the contractor.
They said the project was initiated by the National Police Commission when it issued a resolution on June 14, 2007 directing the PNP Directorate of Logistics to subject all the V-150s assigned to the PNP regional mobile groups and the police Special Action Force to worthiness tests and for immediate repair and rehabilitation.
