Philippines gets 'white boxes' from Japan

Patricia Lourdes Viray - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - The city government of Chiyoda in Tokyo donated nine tons of emergency provisions to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for distribution in the Philippines.

Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel Lopez expressed his appreciation during a ceremony held at the former Philippine Embassy building in Nampeidai, Shibuya last September 17.

A number of 70 disaster preparedness kits or "White Boxes" assembled by persons with disability were also included in the donation.

The contents of the kits were from the emergency supplies that are supposed to be disposed by Japanese companies, government offices and schools.

The supplies scheduled for disposal are donated to countries in immediate need of humanitarian assistance. Inventories are updated and stocks are replaced every few years to ensure its quality.

The Japan Emergency Food Organization (JEFO) founded the White Box Activity (WBA) and the Philippines was the first recipient of the WBA when super typhoon Yolanda hit the country in 2013.
