Voters’ registration to continue even during SK polls
MANILA, Philippines - Registration of voters for the 2016 elections will continue even during the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls set in February next year, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said yesterday.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said the poll body is not inclined to suspend the ongoing registration for the 2016 national elections.
“We are trying to come out with a consensus not to suspend the registration,” he said.
Brillantes noted that more voters would be unable to register if they suspend the registration for three months.
The law mandates the Comelec to suspend voters’ registration for 90 days before a special election and 120 days before a regular election.
Brillantes said the poll body is targeting to register 9.6 million voters.
“At this time, we have yet to reach one million and that’s only for the biometrics. What more of the new registrants,” he said.
The Comelec is also working to register those who have been deactivated after failing to vote in two successive elections.
