Longer nights after Sept. 23 – Pagasa

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos can expect longer nights after the autumnal equinox on Sept. 23, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.

In its monthly astronomical diary, PAGASA said the country will experience the autumnal equinox, when day and night have equal length.

This is the time when the earth tilts upward on its axis, exposing the countries below the equator to more sun and those above it to less sun, the weather bureau said.

PAGASA said nights will be longer as the sun moves below the celestial equator towards the southern hemisphere.

This astronomical event signifies the approach of winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere, it said.
