MMDA deploys 60 female traffic enforcers

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has deployed a team of 60 female traffic enforcers along EDSA.

Crisanto Saruca, head of the MMDA’s Traffic Discipline Office, yesterday said the deployment of “Task Force EDSA Lady Auxiliary Platoon” started on Monday.

He said the MMDA believes women traffic enforcers or what the agency calls “traffic constables” could be better at the job compared to their male counterparts.

This is because motorists are more likely to follow traffic rules at the sight of female traffic enforcers.

“That is one of the reasons. Also, they are young and are trained in traffic management and control,” Saruca said.

The task force will be seen on fixed posts at Ayala Avenue, Gil Puyat (Buendia), Guadalupe, Shaw Boulevard, Ortigas and Cubao from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays.

“They will be on standby for deployment to other parts of EDSA when needed on other days,” Saruca said.

Meanwhile, Saruca said the MMDA would augment the all-women task force with additional enforcers on motorcycles.

The supplementary force will be deployed on EDSA’s northbound lane and along Quezon Avenue during rush hour.
