New weather disturbance may enter Phl tomorrow

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A low-pressure area east of the country has a high chance of intensifying into a tropical depression and may enter the Philippine area of responsibility tomorrow, the state weather bureau said yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the new disturbance will be locally named Kanor.

PAGASA senior weather forecaster Rene Paciente, however, could not yet say if it would make landfall.

PAGASA forecaster Connie Rose Dadivas said the potential cyclone might reach storm category.

Paciente said two to three cyclones usually enter the Philippines in September.

Meanwhile, Paciente said a low-pressure area was spotted at 720 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar as of 10 a.m. yesterday.

“The trough of this weather system will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains in the regions of Eastern and Central Visayas which may trigger flashfloods and landslides,” he said.

Paciente said the low-pressure area is likely to dissipate tomorrow after crossing the landmass of Southern Luzon.

Light to moderate rains and thunderstorms will persist over Western Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga peninsula.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains or thunderstorms.
