Palparan is the accused, not the victim - lawyer

MANILA, Philippines - The lawyer of the families of the two missing University of the Philippines students Karen Empeño and Sheryln Cadapan on Tuesday called on retired Major General Jovito Palparan to quit acting like a victim.
Lawyer Edre Olalia of the National Union of People's Lawyers noted that Palparan, whom left-leaning groups called the Butcher, is the accused in the kidnapping and serious illegal detention cases before the Malolos court.
"Palparan is the accused here, not the victim. No role-playing please," Olalia said in a statement.
Olalia issued the statement after Palparan claimed that he has death threats from left-leaning groups.
On the contrary, Olalia said jail officials at the Bulacan Provincial Jail, where the ex-general is now detained, should also ensure that other inmates in the facility are safe from potential harm.
"He is very dangerous and has credibly been charged of having harmed civilians with dastardly and despicable acts throughout his tenure as a military officer," he said.
Olalia said that authorities should also handcuff the former ranking military officer when he would be brought to the courtroom where the cases would be heard.
"Being a fugitive who ran away for three years and may do so again, authorities should cuff Palparan," he said.
