No SONA boycott from judiciary

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno attended the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Aquino yesterday amid the conflict between the Supreme Court and Malacañang over the ruling last July 1 declaring certain acts under the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) illegal.

The President recognized the SC chief – his first appointee to the SC –  at the start of his one-and-a-half-hour speech.

Sereno attended the event in a Swarovzki-studded gray terno as protesting judges and court employees watched the SONA while holding their “Black and Red Monday” protest in the courts.

No other high court magistrate was spotted in the crowd, according to SC spokesman Theodore Te.

Another Aquino appointee, Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Ampato Cabotaje-Tang, also attended the SONA.
