(UPDATE) Enrile surrenders to police on graft scam
MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Former Senate president Juan Ponce Enrile surrendered this afternoon to police after an anti-graft court issued warrants of arrest against him in connection with the multi-billion peso pork barrel scam.
Enrile was the last among the three senators who were ordered arrested by the Sandiganbayan for allegedly pocketing kickbacks from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) during the past years.
The two other senators who were earlier arrested were Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Jr. The three senators are facing plunder and graft cases.
Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the Aquino administration notes the resolution of the Sandiganbayan ordering the issuance of warrants of arrest against Enrile and other co-accused.
"We are one with the people in their collective aspirations for truth and justice to prevail," he said.
Enrile, 90, is temporarily detained in police detention center where Estrada and Revilla are also being held.
The three senators, along with more than 30 others, allegedly misused some P10 billion ($229.36 million) pork barrel for the past 10 years.
