Supreme Court fails to decide on DAP anew

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court deferred for the second time the voting on the constitutionality of the Aquino administration's controversial Disbursement Acceration Program (DAP).

Supreme Court spokesman Theodore Te said on Wednesday that the magistrates have yet to decide on the fate of the assailed mechanism.

The decision may come as soon as Thursday or as late as the start of next month, reports say.

DAP, which critics call another form of congressional "pork barrel," was designed under President Aquino's watch and launched in 2011 supposedly to fast-track public spending.

It was questioned through seven petitions filed before the high court following Senator Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada's speech alleging that Aquino's government cascaded amounts from DAP to senators as bribe for the ouster of Chief Justice Renato Corona in 2012.

Malacañang, however, denied that the P50 million given to lawmakers served as reward for the trial.
