MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Philippine government today raised the alert level for Thailand and asked Filipinos to avoid public places and to prepare for possible evacuation.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) raised alert to level 2 over Thailand following the declaration of Martial Law by the Thai military.

The DFA issues Alert Level 2 when there are real threats to life, security and property of Filipinos arising from internal disturbance or external threat.

The Philippine government is also expected to ban the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Thailand.

The Thai Army declared Martial Law before dawn today, saying its purpose was to keep the country stable after six months of street protests.
