(UPDATE) 6.3 magnitude earthquake rattles Negros

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - An earthquake measuring 6.3 magnitude on the Richter scale rocked seas off the coast of Negros Occidental this evening, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake stroke sea area off Negros Occidental province at 6: 16 p.m. local time Thursday, with a depth of 58 km. Its epicenter was 77 km west of Hinoba-an town in the province.

No casualties and losses have been reported so far.

Hinoba-an town as well as Iloilo City and Bago City experienced damages, but no damage on infrastructure.  

More aftershocks are expected, according to the Phivolcs.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. There are about 20 to 25 earthquakes occurring in the country everyday, most of them not felt by the general populace.
