(UPDATE) Aquino names new Navy chief

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - President Benigno Aquino III has appointed Rear Admiral Jesus Millan as the new chief of the Philippine Navy, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said today.

AFP spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said Millan will replace Flag-Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Jose Luis Alano who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 on May 1.

Millan will formally assume command of the Philippine Navy in rites to be presided by Aquino at the Naval Base Heracleo Alano in the northern Philippine province of Cavite on Wednesday.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1982, Millan is a professional navy officer who has served the AFP in various administrative and operational capacities.

He is currently the commander of Naval Forces Western Mindanao and was the former chief of Naval Staff and commander of the Naval Reserve Command.
