Down Syndrome group to Yeng Guiao: Stop using 'M' word

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) released on Friday a statement concerning Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao for using the word "mongoloid" against Meralco Bolts player Cliff Hodge during a basketball game on Wednesday.

"This is very painful for parents who are blessed with a child with Down Syndrome, especially (hearing) this term used as an insult to another person. Persons with Down Syndrome are one of the most gentle people, and have been the source of pride and joy for so many families who simply love them unconditionally," DSAPI Chair Antonio Pasia said, adding that the derogatory term is no longer used worldwide to refer to people with Down Syndrome.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) slapped Guiao with a P100,000 fine, with PBA Commissioner Chito Salud saying that such perojative language has no place in a league that regards itself as an institution the youth can look up to.

"We hope that it the future, you will try to refrain from using the "M" word and perhaps join us in one of our many activities so that you can experience the joy these children bring," Pasia said.
