MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The government congratulated today Filipino boxing icon, Manny Pacquiao after he reclaimed the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against American boxer Timothy Bradley.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigaill Valte said that Pacquiao serves as a symbol of recovery to many Filipinos who were hit by disasters last year.
"Manny's triumph further proves that as long as Filipinos pour their heart and soul into their respective fields and disciplines, they can overcome any and all setbacks and challenges that may come their way," she said in a statement.
Valte said that the 35-year old Filipino boxer, Sarangani Representative, is an inspiration for many Filipinos, especially for those who suffered from different calamities, such as the powerful earthquake in Bohol and Cebu, the Zamboanga siege, and Typhoon Haiyan, all took place last year.
"After our country was hit by disaster after disaster last year, Manny serves as a symbol of our recovery. Our message to the world is clear: While vicious storms may knock us down, we will always stand back up. The deep faith, solidarity, and strength of will of the Filipino people will always prove stronger," she said.
Pacquiao first lost to Bradley in a controversial split decision in 2012.
He reclaimed the title through a 12-round victory over Timothy Bradley Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas ( Sunday in Manila time) to avenge his controversial 2012 loss to the previously unbeaten American.
