MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay asked his daughter Sen. Nancy Binay to file a bill in the Senate seeking to make barangay officials and workers regular government employees.
He said the last Congress was not able to pass the proposed bill and he now hopes the measure will be revived in the present Congress.
“Actually, it is a pending legislation, but it sleeps in Congress. I told Senator Nancy to revive it,†he said.
The Vice President said it is high time to improve the standard of living of barangay officials, health workers, barangay watchmen, street sweepers and other barangay workers.
He noted that at present, barangay officials and workers are only receiving incentives for their services. They are also not members of Pag-IBIG Fund, Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).
