‘Compensation of HR victims done by April’

MANILA, Philippines - The distribution of compensation for martial law human rights victims will soon be completed, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said yesterday.

Marc Titus Cebreros, CHR information and communications division head, said the awarding of compensation for those in the National Capital Region started last week.

“We are now in the process of distributing compensation for those in the Luzon area,” Cebreros said.

He expressed hope the distribution will be completed by April this year.

Earlier, a team from the CHR along with groups such as Claimants 1081 went to Mindanao and the Visayas to award the compensation of rightful claimants.

The monetary compensation amounting to $10 million was the result of a settlement between the human rights victims and the buyer of the Monet painting.

The painting by the French Impressionist master Claude Monet is considered stolen. In 2010, it was reportedly sold for $32 million by Vilma Bautista, former secretary of Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos.
