MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine government on Tuesday expressed its concern over the recent developments in Crimea, calling for a diplomatic solution over the issue.
"We support actions toward de-escalating tensions in the region and for comprehensive, inclusive and peaceful dialogue and reconciliation, with full respect for the rule of law, to be pursued by all parties," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
The state agency said the Philippines takes note of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3314 and calls for maximum restraint to be shown by all parties. Resolution 3314 defines the crime of aggression.
Crimea recently voted to secede from Ukraine following a violent uprising that removed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych from power. Russian troops immediately occupied Crimea, which held a referendum that detached it from Ukraine. The Ukrainian Constitution prohibits such move.
Putin signed a decree recognizing Crimea as a sovereign state, paving the way for its inclusion in the Russian Federation. The United States and the European Union reject the Crimean referendum.
