(UPDATE) 10 killed in NPA attack of Davao police station
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - At least 10 people were confirmed killed and over a dozen were wounded after members of leftist rebel group New People's Army (NPA) attacked a police station in southern Philippines today, a military officer said.
The killed included six soldiers, two policemen and two NPA guerrillas, said Capt. Ernest Carolina, spokesman of the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division.
Government security forces were pursuing some 50 NPAs who attacked the police station in Matanao town in Davao del Sur province at around 4:30 a.m. today.
Authorities said the soldiers engaged the fleeing NPAs in a firefight. The leftist insurgents then detonated landmines against the soldiers.
