Public asked to observe Fire Prevention Month

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has called on the public to observe measures to avoid fires as the observance of fire prevention month starts next week.

Chief Superintendent Santiago Laguna, BFP National Capital Region director, over the weekend reminded citizens to be extra cautious in everything.

Under Presidential Proclamation 115, March was declared fire prevention month, being the hottest month of the year.

“People are advised to eliminate negligence on the use of electrical appliances, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), and other combustible materials that might cause fire such as matches, flammable liquids, and lighters,” Laguna said.

The BFP said house owners should not use appliances like electric fans and air-conditioners continuously if possible to avoid overheating.

Check electrical circuits at home, which may cause overheating.

“Unplug appliances if not in use and avoid octopus connections,” the BFP said. “Store combustible materials out of children’s reach, inspect your LPG tank as well as its hose.”

The BFP also said people should familiarize themselves with the hotline number of the nearest fire station. Call hotline 117 in case of fire or other emergencies.

From Jan. 1 to Feb. 13, the BFP recorded a total of 482 fire incidents in Metro Manila alone.
