PNoy to celebrate People Power anniversary with disaster victims

MANILA, Philippines - Instead of celebrating it in Malacañang or Metro Manila, President Benigno Aquino III will commemorate the 28th anniversary of the People Power Revolution in provinces devastated by disasters.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a televised press briefing that this will be an opportunity for the President to show his solidarity with victims of disasters such as Super Typhoon "Yolanda."

"He wants to be one with the people especially those who are affected by the natural calamities," Lacierda said. "He wants to spend time with the people."

An advisory from the EDSA People Power Commission (EPPC) said the disaster-stricken provinces to be visited by the President are those "where recovery is evident."

According to the EPPC, the President will visit and hold a "pulong-bayan" or town hall meetings in key provinces.

During the EDSA anniversary rites, the EPPC said it will highlight modern-day Filipinos "working together for the recovery and continued development of the country."

The theme for this year's celebration is "Kapit-bisig Tungo sa Pagbangon."

Over the weekend, Malacañang said the anniversary rites will be moved to the Palace grounds and away from EDSA to give consideration to commuters using the major thoroughfare.

Traffic in Metro Manila is expected to worsen in the coming days due the various government infrastructure projects that have started.
