PNP urged to seize smuggled pyrotechnics

Dino Balabo - The Philippine Star

MALOLOS CITY, Philippines – Smuggled pyrotechnics are labeled “Made in Bulacan” when sold in the market, pyrotechnics manufacturers and dealers said yesterday.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Vimmie Erese, Philippine Pyrotechnics Manufacturers and Dealers Association Inc. (PPMDAI) president, asked police to seize the smuggled products after the Bureau of Customs (BOC) failed to stop their importation.

“Smuggled pyrotechnics have caused the decline in the manufacture and sale of local pyrotechnics,” she said.

Erese said the PPMDAI is closely monitoring its more than 2,000 members nationwide as some of them could also be selling smuggled pyrotechnics.

Its members include about 50 manufacturers and the rest are dealers and retailers, she added.

Meanwhile, environmental and health advocates asked the public yesterday to avoid toxic and dangerous firecrackers and fireworks when celebrating the New Year.

Waste and pollution watchdog EcoWaste Coalition has organized a multi-stakeholder campaign  “Pamayanang Hindi Nagpapaputok: Buo, Busog at Malusog” a few days before the New Year.

Aileen Lucero, EcoWaste Coalition national coordinator, said firecrackers are the last thing needed to celebrate the season.

“These have already been proven to be harmful to humans, animals and the environment,” she said. – With Rhodina Villanueva
