Binay thanks US for typhoon aid

Jose Rodel Clapano - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay yesterday thanked United States Ambassador Philip Goldberg for the immediate and overwhelming assistance of the US in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

“On behalf of my fellow Filipinos, I wish to thank the United States for the kind generosity and outpouring of solidarity shown by the American people in this time of adversity,” Binay said.

He said he was in Guiuan, Samar and witnessed first hand how the sailors of USS George Washington helped in the relief efforts.

Goldberg, who paid a courtesy call on Binay on Thursday, reassured the vice president of the US’ continued support in the rebuilding, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts in affected areas.

“The logistics and capabilities, the aircraft, it is something that we spent to build up that capacity for war and for peace. So it’s nice to use it for a peaceful and very successful mission,” Goldberg said.

As of Nov. 22, US humanitarian assistance to the Philippines amounted to almost $60 million, including $30 million from USAID and $21.857 million from the US Department of Defense.

Most of these are allocated for logistics and relief commodities, WASH (water, hygiene and sanitation), and shelter and settlements.

The USAID disaster assistance response team is also constantly evaluating the humanitarian situation in the Philippines to determine additional requirements.

Goldberg also mentioned to Binay the importance of having a framework agreement for an increased rotational presence in the Philippines.

“I have always believed that having an increased presence here, being able to preposition supplies, being able to train more with the Philippine forces will help you deal with catastrophes,” Goldberg said.
