CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna , Philippines   â€“ Police will file today criminal charges against the driver of a Superlines bus involved in last Saturday‘s multiple collision in Atimonan, Quezon.

Twenty people, most of them bus passengers including three children were killed in the accident, and 57 others were injured.

Quezon police director Senior Superintendent Rolando Ylagan said Albert Nava will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple serious physical injuries either before the Atimonan or Gumaca Municipal Prosecutor’s Office.

Nava is in police custody.

“Under the law, the police authorities are tasked to file the criminal charges, while in civil case, an individual and persons, particularly the relatives of the fatalities are the one who would file charges against the bus company or management,” he said.

Ylagan said officials and representatives of Superlines Bus Co. have promised to cooperate in the investigation and provide assistance to the victims.

â€œMost of the fatalities were passenger of Superlines because it was the first vehicle that the 10-wheeler truck hit,” he said.

Ylagan said some of the victims are still recuperating from their injuries in different hospitals.

No additional fatalities were reported, he added.

Ylagan said the driver of the 10-wheeler truck that hit the bus from behind was among the 20 fatalities.

The Diversion Road in Atimonan, Tagkawayan and Calauag roads are an accident-prone area, he added.

The accident occurred at around 1 a.m. Saturday along Diversion Road in Barangay Sta. Catalina, Atimonan.
