PNP to render full honors to ex-chief Mendoza

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday said it will render full honors to its former chief, Leandro Mendoza.

"Full honors will be rendered to General Mendoza, in accordance with PNP protocol, customs and tradition," the PNP said in a statement.

Mendoza, who also served as Executive Secretary and secreatry of the Department of Transportation and Communications, was a member of the Philippine Military Academy class of 1969.

He becamed chief of the PNP during the time of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from 2001 to 2002.

Mendoza died early Monday morning at his home in San Juan, Batangas after suffering a second stroke. His first was last year while he was celebrating his birthday.

"The 148,000-strong officers, men and women of the Philippine National Police mourns the passing of General Leandro Mendoza, the 9th Chief of the Philippine National Police," the PNP said.

Mendoza is survived by his wife Soledad and children Maria Leah, Michael, Mark Llandro, Maria Leilani, Matthew and Maria Leanne.
