Gov't condemns attack by Muslim rebels

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The government condemned in the "strongest possible terms" today the attack allegedly by members of the faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Zamboanga City.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that it is incumbent on all people of goodwill to reject the violence that has erupted.

"The ongoing attack of armed individuals in Zamboanga City, including initial reports of the possible use of civilians as human shields, is a cause for great concern," he said.

He assured that authorities have been responding to the situation in a manner that will reduce the risk to innocent civilians and restore peace and order to Zamboanga City at the soonest possible time.

At least an army soldier was killed and several others were wounded. Some 30 individuals were also reportedly being taken as hostages.

Lacierda urged the public to refrain from spreading speculation as fear and alarm spread by disinformation would only help those intent on disrupting the lives of residents of Zamboanga City.

Misuari-led MILF reportedly declared independence early last month in a village in Sulu province. His faction has been opposing the framework agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the largest Muslim rebel group in the country.
