Group urges DOJ to drop cases vs trade union leaders

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -A rights group on Monday called on the Department of Justice to withdraw the charges against the several jailed trade union leaders, claiming the cases were fabricated.

Tambuli ng Mamamayan alleged that the criminal charges against trade union heads Amelita Bravante, Roy Velez, Randy Vegas, and Raul Camposano are mere fabrication.

"The Regional Trial Court in Lagawe, Ifugao has  recalled the warrants of arrest against Velez, Gamara, Vegas and Camposano on July 26, 2013.  However, the Commission on Human Rights has yet to release any results of their investigation.

"We also call to the Department of Justice through their prosecutor in Labo, Camarines Norte to withdraw their charges against the said trade union and human rights defenders," Tambuli said in a statement.

Members of Tambuli, with other militant urban poor groups, trooped to the office of Commission on Human Rights  to protest the demolition of homes of families of Brgy. Bignay, Valenzuela City and of Sitio San Roque, North Triangle, Quezon City last August.

They are calling on the CHR to look into their case and to conduct an investigation about the human rights violations committed against the residents during the violent demolitions in their communities.

After the protest in front of the CHR building, the protesters proceeded to the DOJ and the Supreme Court to follow up and also demand their immediate action in the cases against the trade union leaders.
