Noy signs law creating more science and tech scholars

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino has signed a law that expands the government’s science and technology scholarship program to encourage more college students to pursue careers in this field.

Signed on Aug. 23, Republic Act 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013” provides scholarships to deserving students and other specially gifted citizens to enable them to pursue higher education or training in the areas of science, technology and engineering.

Under the new law, students are entitled to an annual award for full-time study equal to the complete financial assistance package offered under Republic Act 7687.

The scholarship will be given in the last two years of undergraduate study or in the last three years for those enrolled in five-year courses such as engineering, while matriculating in an approved program.

Scholars are mandated to teach as their return of service, especially in their home regions. They should also agree to repay the amounts disbursed plus interest pursuant to the terms of their service contract.
