AFP welcomes NPA call for ceasefire amid relief operations

Alexis Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In a rare display of unity, the military and the communist group cited the importance of unhampered delivery of relief to storm-hit areas.

The military yesterday welcomed the call of communist rebels to declare a ceasefire in order to give way to relief operations.

Lt. Gen. Caesar Ronnie Ordoyo, chief of the Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command, said they appreciate the gesture of the New People’s Army (NPA) to extend assistance to flood victims.

“During these times, we need to help each other for the sake of our countrymen who were affected by the rains and floods,” Ordoyo said in a statement.

Southern Luzon is one of the areas worst hit by the southwest monsoon and Tropical Storm Maring.

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) has demanded that the military stop combat operations to allow its local units to undertake relief efforts.

Ordoyo said they would recommend the rebels’ demand and wait for directives from higher headquarters. He said they have been conducting relief and rescue operations since Monday.

The official urged all stakeholders including the NPA to help the affected residents.
