PeopleAsia honors Ninoy in special issue

MANILA, Philippines -  PeopleAsia pays tribute to the late Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino Jr. in its special commemorative issue on his 30th death anniversary. Aquino’s death is widely seen as the spark that led to peaceful struggle for the restoration of democratic freedoms in the Philippines.

For this special issue, Ninoy’s only son President Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III sat down with PeopleAsia editor-in-chief and STAR columnist Joanne Rae Ramirez for an in-depth and exclusive interview on how his late father’s life – and death – shaped him into the man he is today.

The special picture-laden commemorative issue also features an exclusive article written by the late former President Corazon Aquino for PeopleAsia in 2003 about Ninoy’s struggles and triumphs.

Ballsy Cruz, Pinky Abellada, Viel Dee and Kris Aquino, in exclusive interviews with Ramirez and Bum Tenorio Jr., also share their memories of Ninoy as a doting father and a public servant, who made it clear to them from the start that he put country before family.

The special issue also comes complete with articles from celebrated personalities like veteran journalist and PeopleAsia founding publisher the late Max V. Soliven, who vividly described in an article first published in PeopleAsia in 2003, Ninoy’s odyssey from his premature birth to his death on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport. PeopleAsia publisher and STAR columnist Babe Romualdez also writes about how the country’s history and the destiny of the Aquino couple have intertwined.

Mrs. Aquino’s former spokesperson and former senator Rene V. Saguisag, for his part, writes about the enduring significance of Ninoy’s ultimate sacrifice.

Aside from printing rare photos from the vaults of the Aquino Foundation and the Aquino family albums, PeopleAsia also takes readers down memory lane with a comprehensive photo essay on Ninoy’s journey from Boston, to the Manila International Airport, to Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City, and to his final resting place at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque.

Various personalities from politics, the religious, the business sector and showbiz also share their own insights on the modern-day hero in a forum, “Where were you when Ninoy was shot?”

Insightful, inspiring and thought-provoking, PeopleAsia’s special commemorative issue is now available in leading newsstands and bookstores nationwide. For inquiries, please call Flor Alvarez or Jannette Velasco at 892-1854.
