Group revives death penalty proposal amid bombings

MANILA, Philippines - In the wake of the recent bombings in Mindanao that have killed at least 16 people, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) asked lawmakers to revive the death penalty to prevent crimes and acts of terrorism in the country.

During Wednesday's Senate inquiry into the July 26 Cagayan de Oro blast, Dante Jimenez of the VACC said stern penalties must be introduced again to deter such fatal incidents.

"I appeal to you lawmakers, not only here in the Senate but also in the House of Representatives, please, look into the penalties. We are advocating the return of the death penalty law for heinous crimes and for terrorism," said Jimenez.

At least eight people, including health professionals, were killed in the CDO blast while eight more were also killed in a car bombing in Cotabato City on Monday.

On Wednesday, another explosion was reported in North Cotabato while seven soldiers were also wounded in a roadside bomb attack in Maguindanao.

In Manila, bomb threats were reported in the Department of Justice main building and in the Court of Appeals.

Senator Gringo Honasan said during the inquiry that he wants an inventory of the laws meant to prevent violent incidents such as bombings to check their effectiveness.

The Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs chaired by Senator Grace Poe is holding the inquiry in aid of legislation.

"We need a stronger, united stance to stop such brazen acts which impede the gains our nation has achieved. My committee is determined to examine and assess ways to support and strengthen mechanisms toward this end," said the neophyte lawmaker.
