The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - Armed members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) snatched 12 villagers in a remote village in Basilan yesterday to exact against a rival clan, local military said here today.

Colonel Carlito Galvez, chief of the Philippine Army's 104th Brigade, said about 50 MNLF members led by Hassan Addang abducted the 12 civilians around 4:20 p.m. Thursday in the hamlet of Bohe Baca, Tipo-Tipo town.

According to the military, the victims include seven minors, ranging from 5 months old to 15 years old, and five adults. Most of the victims were relatives, it added.

The military said at least three of the victims were subsequently freed Friday following initial negotiation by the forces under the 104th Army Brigade and villager leaders in Tipo- Tipo town.

"Three of the victims have been initially released safely following negotiation,"  Galvez said.

The military told press that the abduction appeared to exact revenge against the rival clan who reportedly abducted three of Addang's daughters in the adjacent Lamitan City.

"As of press time, the safe release of hostages being held on both camps are still being negotiated," the military said.
