PAGASA chief resigns

Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - The head of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially stepped down from his post, a weather official said on Wednesday.

PAGASA officer-in-charge Vicente Malano announced in a press conference the resignation of Dr. Nathaniel Servando as administrator of the state weather bureau.

Malano also received a text message from his former superior thanking all the people he worked with in PAGASA.

Servando originally filed a three-month leave last February citing health reasons and “others."

He reportedly accepted a teaching job in Dubai, having the need for a higher salary to finance his children’s college education.

The Aquino administration has expressed confidence that there is still enough manpower in the state weather bureau amid the reported exodus of meteorologists, including Servando.

"Confident naman po tayo dun sa kakayahan ng mga forecasters natin. We have new forecasters that are coming in and are also looking out to prove their mettle and, hopefully, they will work out," Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said last week.

"If someone wants--not just the weather forecasters--if someone wants to seek greener pastures for himself or for his family, hindi naman po natin pwedeng pigilan 'yon," said Valte.

A professor from the University of the Philippines (UP) has also claimed that there is no shortage of meteorologists in the country.

“You don’t need to have a degree in meteorology to work in PAGASA,” said Rene Rollon, director of the UP Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM).
