Rains fail to stop voters
MANILA, Philippines - Rains did not deter many Filipino voters from lining up at polling centers yesterday.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) estimated a 70 percent voter turnout.
Light to moderate rains were experienced in Luzon, Western Visayas and Mindanao due to the tail end of a cold front and the intertropical convergence zone, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
PAGASA weather forecaster Buddy Javier said Metro Manila also experienced thunderstorms due to localized heating.
The rest of the Visayas, meanwhile, was partly cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Javier said cloudy skies with light to moderate rains would prevail over Luzon, Western Visayas and Mindanao in the next two days.
He said temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days as the easterlies – warm winds from the Pacific Ocean – peak.
Meanwhile, Javier said the onset of the rainy season is expected in the third week of May.
