MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino inspected yesterday bus terminals, ports and airports to check security preparations before the Holy Week exodus.

Aquino told reporters that concerned government agencies will remain on heightened alert until Sunday to ensure the safety of travelers.

His first stop was Pier 12 in Port Area, Manila where the Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp., one of the country’s premier shipping lines, is located.

He was accompanied by Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya and Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. of the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

Aquino was welcomed by Maritime Industry Authority administrator Nicasio Conti, Philippine Ports Authority general manager Juan Sta. Ana, and officials of the Manila North Harbor Port Inc.

He inspected the shipping company’s ticketing booths, check-in counters, help desk areas, passengers’ pre-boarding area as well as facilities for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The President suggested that English signs on ships be translated to Filipino to help ordinary passengers in case of emergencies.

Aquino said he instructed Abaya and Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Rodolfo Isorena to enhance emergency procedures for passengers on ships.

He commended the efforts initiated by the security personnel of the shipping firm and law enforcers to prevent the entry of drugs and other prohibited items following the arrest of a passenger for shabu possession.

Aquino also visited the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and the Victory Liner bus terminal in Pasay City.

He inspected the security at NAIA Terminal 4 (old domestic airport) before proceeding to NAIA Terminal 3.

Manila International Airport Authority general manager Jose Angel Honrado briefed the Chief Executive on the status of passenger volume and traffic at the airport.

Last week, the Department of Transportation and Communications launched OPLAN Ligtas-Biyahe: Kwaresma 2013 to ensure the safety of passengers this Holy Week.

Meanwhile, the Highway Patrol Group of the Philippine National Police yesterday reminded passengers going to the provinces for the holiday break to observe precautions on the road to avoid accidents.
