Phl 4th cybercrime target in Asia-Pacific, says study

Lawrence Agcaoili - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines ranked fourth in the top 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific region targeted by cybercriminals, the Security Labs 2012 research conducted by Websense Inc. showed.

Alex Lim, channel and alliance director for Websense, said the Philippines placed next to China, India, and Taiwan in the list of countries most vulnerable to cybercrime in the region.

Other countries victimized in Asia Pacific include Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia.

On the other hand, the global top 10 victim countries were the US, France, Great Britain, Italy, Turkey, China, India, Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan.

The research showed cybercriminals increasingly set their targeted attacks on businesses and governments as 70 percent of the company’s customers in both sectors experienced a weekly average of 1,719 attacks per 1,000 users.

Websense, a Nasdaq-listed firm, said the attacks included threats initiated through the social media, mobile devices, email, and other attack vectors.

The research also showed that the top 10 countries hosting “malwares” (malicious softwares) were the US, Russia, Germany, China, Moldova, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, and Canada.

Websense, a firm specializing in unified web security, data loss prevention and email content security has been appointed by Transition Systems Philippines Inc. as a value added distributor in the Philippines.

Transition is a leading distributor of security, networking products, and solutions in Asia with operations in Singapore, Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

“This appointment aims to provide in-depth product knowledge, exceptional technical expertise and high quality security service for our customers. We believe that Transition Systems Group has the expertise necessary to support our APAC market. This will help our customers enable their businesses through improved information security systems,” Lim said.

He pointed out Websense products feature unified management, analytics, and flexibility to deploy as an appliance in the cloud (upload), or even both.

“Websense identifies, classifies, and understands content in all of its forms - and wherever it travels - so that it can be protected. I believe no one has anything that comes close to Websense TRITON,” he added.

Transition Systems country manager Renato Garcia said the tie up with Websense would allow the company to offer a combination of web, email and data loss prevention security technologies to customers.

“We are extremely excited to partner with Websense because their solutions will help our customers quickly respond to Internet security threats, data loss prevention and email content security,” Garcia said.
