Jack Enrile: Cha cha better for Phl's future

Alexis Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) senatorial bet Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile has joined his colleagues who are calling for charter change and vowed to push for provisions that could lead to food security.

“The sooner there is charter change, the better for our country’s future. I am one of those who favor the amendments of certain provisions in our constitution particularly those that directly impact our agricultural sector,” Enrile said in a statement.

“If we want to achieve food security and sovereignty, we must adopt a rationalized food master plan which will help ensure a steady and affordable supply of food,” he added.

Enrile did not elaborate on what provisions of the 1987 Constitution should be scrapped or modified.

He merely cited the need for correct infrastructure, proper lending facilities and subsidies to achieve “food sovereignty.”

“Our agricultural sector especially here in Central Luzon has all the potential to achieve, if not exceed production targets,” Enrile said.

Majority of UNA senatorial candidates interviewed by The STAR last Monday are in favor of amending the charter to lure foreign investments and to ensure continuity in public service. Enrile was not present during the interview.

UNA bets who said the constitution should be amended were former senators Richard Gordon, Juan Miguel Zubiri and Ernesto Maceda, Zambales Rep. Milagros Magsaysay, Margarita Cojuangco, San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito.

Nancy Binay, who was also present during the interview, said she is still studying the possible iimpact of constitutional amendments.
