The Philippine Star

The Philippine Embassy in Seoul reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that 15 Filipino graduate students in Korea received scholarship grants from the Woojung Education and Culture Foundation in a ceremony held on February 18 at the Korea Chamber of Commerce Building in Seoul, South Korea.

The sponsor of the Foundation is Booyoung Group, a local conglomerate focusing on construction and headed by Chairman Lee Jong-kuen.

In addition to the 15 Filipino students, 85 other recipients came from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, Kenya, Ghana, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam.  Each student received certificates and a one-year grant of 4 million won (around $4,000).

“The large number of scholarship grants awarded to the Philippines shows the high level of excellence being exhibited by Filipino students in Korea and is also a good indication of the excellent bilateral relations between our two countries,” said Philippine Ambassador to Korea Luis T. Cruz during the awarding ceremony.

There are a total of 429 Filipino students in Korea as of December 2012.

The 15 Filipino scholars are currently enrolled in the following graduate courses: Practical Applied Linguistics, Biomedical Science and Technology, Computer Science and Engineering, Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Energy Science, Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, Molecular BioMedicine, Inter Asia NGO Studies, Animal Science, Medicine, European Union Studies, Masters of Business Administration, Environmental Engineering and Public Administration.
