Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Since the start of the election gun ban last Jan. 13, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has arrested 938 people for carrying guns, explosives and bladed weapons at checkpoints.

The PNP said a total of 896 guns, 35 grenades, 171 other explosives and 234 bladed weapons were seized.

Among those arrested at police checkpoints for violating the gun ban were 845 civilians, 12 government officials, 13 police personnel, five soldiers, a fireman and 62 security guards.

The PNP is enforcing Commission on Elections Resolution No. 9561-A imposing a nationwide “Ban on Bearing, Carrying or Transporting of Firearms or Other Deadly Weapons.”

The PNP started implementing the election gun ban last Jan. 13 and will remain in effect until June 12.

Following the Comelec-imposed gun ban for the midterm polls in May, the PNP began maintaining checkpoints to ensure a Secure and Fair Elections in 2013 (SAFE 2013).

With the Comelec imposed gun ban, the PNP has suspended all Permits to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence (PTCFORs).
