Binay attends funeral of former Cambodia king

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay left yesterday morning for Cambodia to represent President Aquino in the state funeral and cremation of the former king and head of state of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk.

Sihanouk was revered as Cambodia’s “father of national independence, territorial integrity and unity.”

Binay will meet Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh.

He will also meet with Deputy Prime Minister and minister in charge of the Council of Ministers Sok An and the governor of Phnom Penh Kep Chuktema.

Binay, presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) concerns, will also attend Mass and have a dialogue with the Filipino community in Cambodia.

The Cambodian government earlier scheduled an official mourning period from Oct. 17 - 23, 2012.

The second official mourning period for King Norodom Sihanouk has been scheduled on Feb. 1 - 7 this year.
