PETA: Keep pets indoors during New Year revelry
MANILA, Philippines - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) yesterday appealed to pet owners to ensure the safety of their pets during the New Year revelry, since the sound of firecrackers could place them in danger.
“Many animals go missing because they panic and jump over fences or break chains. Animals even jump through plate-glass windows to get away from the terrifying sounds. Some animals are reunited with their families, but others are never found or are hit by cars or killed in other ways as they flee,” said PETA in a statement.
PETA’s Rochelle Regodon said they support calls for the total ban on fireworks because “firecrackers are a nightmare for both domestic and wild animals.”
She said that pets should not be allowed to roam the streets because the loud explosions from firecrackers agitate them.
PETA advised pet owners to keep their animals safe on Dec. 31 by keeping them indoors. It would be better if the owner stays with them and gives them comfort.
The animal rights group also suggested that they leave pets at home and do not take them to watch the fireworks displays.
“Never leave animals tethered or chained outside,” it said.
PETA also asked the public to be alert for stray animals that may be distressed. If they happen to see an animal injured by a firecracker, they may call PETA at 0999-888-7382.
