Manila among the 'worst cities to live in'

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  A YouTube channel has named Manila as the fourth worst city where "living can be a bit of a challenge" because of its dense population and high susceptibility to natural calamities.

The channel "All Time 10s" included the Philippine capital in the video "10 Worst Cities to Live In," claiming that it has the "densest population" among the world's urban areas.

"This crowded city has 43,079 people per square kilometer. Manila residents are also victim to 20 cyclones a year, as well as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis," the video claimed, referring to Manila.

Statistics journal Demographia published in July by urban planning scholar Wendell Cox, however, lists Dhaka, Bangladesh as the largest urban area in the world in terms of population density, or the average number of people occupying a given land area, with 44,400 people per square kilometer.

Hyderabad, Pakistan follows with 39,900 density per square kilometer and Mumbai, India is the third most crowded city with 30,900 population density.

Manila is only listed in the journal as the 75th most densely population urban center with 14,400 people per square kilometer in a total land area of 1,437 square kilometers.

Hit with a few earthquakes each year, Manila is also known for floods due to tropical cyclones but largely unaffected by volcano eruptions and tsunamis.

It also names Prypiat, Ukraine as the worst city to be a resident of for being the "most radioactive" in the world, followed by San Pedro Sula in Honduras as the "most murderous" in the world for its skyrocketing crime rates.

North Korea's Pyongyang garnered the third top spot for being the "most censored" city where "the only media allowed is state-controlled propaganda" and using personal communication devices like mobile phones is outlawed.
