Weather forecasters get unpaid benefits, at last
MANILA, Philippines – Employees of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) finally received their benefits, which were withheld from them since March this year.
Ramon Agustin, president of the Philippine Weathermen Employees Association (PWEA), said they received their benefits for March and April last Aug. 17, and are set to receive the one for May this coming Sept. 7.
“We are very thankful for the immediate action of President Aquino on our concern. The recognition bestowed on us by the President will inspire us more to perform our noble task in protecting our countrymen from weather hazards,” Agustin said.
PAGASA employees, including weather forecasters, staged a protest at the height of typhoon “Helen,” prompting the President to make a surprise visit to the PAGASA office in Quezon City.
The Magna Carta benefits include longevity pay, hazard pay, and subsistence allowance and laundry allowance.
PAGASA administrator Nathaniel Servando said the low-ranking employees of the weather bureau are the most affected by the suspension of the benefits under the Magna Carta for science workers.
