DOH reports one EV-71 case in Philippines

- Cheryl M. Arcibal - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday confirmed that a boy from Davao City has tested positive for Enterovirus-71, which caused the death of more than 60 children in Cambodia.

The DOH said in a statement that of the tests done on eight suspected Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases, one tested positive for EV-71.

"Sec. Enrique Ona confirmed that a one year and seven month old boy from Davao City tested positive for the EV-71. The boy developed fever and rashes on his hands, soles of feet, mouth and buttocks last July 6. The boy had no history of travel outside the country," the DOH said.

The DOH said that the boy was sent home and has since recovered and there has been no other cases reported in the boy's household and community.

Ona reminded the public to observe proper cleanliness and hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus and other illnesses.

"Prevention relies on individual personal hygiene and hand washing; shared toys or teaching tools in daycare should be cleaned, washed and disinfected as they easily become contaminated," Ona said.
