13 Phl eagles up for adoption

- The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines  – The Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Calinan District in this city, is looking for sponsors to adopt at least 13 Philippine Eagles in a bid to help assure the continued survival of the species.

Officials of the non-profit Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), which runs the Malagos eagle center, said at present the center keeps 36 raptors, 13 of which are up for adoption.

The PEF started in 1992 its breeding program, which has already produced 24 eagles bred in captivity, among them Pag-asa and Pagkakaisa.

Its “Adopt an Eagle” program entails a contribution of at least P150,000 annually for the upkeep of an eagle as well as for research and conservation actions.

As part of its breeding program, the PEF also rehabilitates and releases eagles to the wild.

The PEF also embarks on programs to educate the public on the Philippine Eagle and on caring for the environment.

One of those who responded to the “Adopt an Eagle” program was the Aboitiz Power Corporation that has adopted since 2010 a 14-year-old female Philippine Eagle named “Pangarap.”

“AboitizPower values Pangarap as she symbolizes the aspirations of the people of Mindanao to thrive amid the challenges of our times. We hope our assistance can go a long way in supporting Pangarap as well as the men and women behind the

effort to save our wildlife and the Philippine eagle,” AboitizPower president and chief executive officer Erramon Aboitiz said.

Aboitiz stressed the significance of caring for the environment.

“AboitizPower’s deeper motivation is its commitment to do its share for a healthier planet, and its desire to bequeath to succeeding generations a socially responsible and environment-friendly business. As we pursue our goals, we aim to be cognizant when it comes to achieving a sustainable balance between People, the Planet and Profit, or the 3P Balance,” Aboitiz said.
